Pumpkin Feta Dip With Honey: Easy Fall Recipe to Make With Kids

Pumpkin feta dip with honey and walnuts in a blue bowl, with toast, a roasted Hokkaido pumpkin and the Fall Is... picture book

Last weekend I roasted half a Hokkaido pumpkin and turned it into the easiest fall dip: creamy pumpkin and salty feta blended with a little honey, crunchy walnuts stirred in and a drizzle of honey on top. It’s sweet and salty at the same time, and it disappeared from the bowl in minutes. 🎃

Best of all, kids can do most of the work. Here’s how we make it, with the jobs split between little hands and grown-up hands.

What you need

  • 300 g (about 1¼ cups) roasted Hokkaido pumpkin (butternut works well too)
  • 100 g (about ¾ cup) crumbled feta
  • A small handful of walnuts (about ¼ cup / 30 g)
  • Honey, to taste
  • A pinch of salt
  • Toast, for serving

The easy rule to remember: 3 parts pumpkin to 1 part feta.

How to make it

  1. Grown-up job: Heat the oven to 180°C / 350°F. Cut the pumpkin in half.
  2. Kid job: Scoop out the seeds with a spoon. (Messy and fun!)
  3. Grown-up job: Roast the pumpkin for 30–40 minutes, until it’s soft and a fork slides in easily. It depends on the pumpkin, so check it. Let it cool.
  4. Kid job: Scoop the soft pumpkin out of its skin with a spoon and weigh it on the kitchen scale. If your pumpkin gives you more than 300 g, just use it all and add a bit more feta. Keep it 3 parts pumpkin to 1 part feta.
  5. Kid job: Crumble the feta into the food processor.
  6. Grown-up job: Blend the feta on its own until it’s smooth and creamy.
  7. Kid job: Add the pumpkin, a pinch of salt and a little honey.
  8. Grown-up job: Blend again until smooth. Taste it together and add more honey if you like it sweeter.
  9. Kid job: Put the walnuts in a zip bag and gently crush them into small pieces with a rolling pin. Stir most of them into the dip.
  10. Kid job: Spoon the dip into a bowl, drizzle a little honey on top and sprinkle with the rest of the walnuts.

Serve with warm toast and dig in!

Taste and talk

While you eat, ask your little one to describe the dip with their senses. What color is it? Is it smooth or bumpy? Sweet, salty or both? Which crunchy bit is hiding inside?

You can also play a rhyme game from my book Fall Is…: one person says “Fall is…” and the other finishes the line. “Fall is pumpkin dip on bread!” “Fall is honey, gold and red!” Silly answers count too.
